Methylene Blue in the Treatment of Cholera

Sir,?I would be grateful for any of your readers' comments on the following hypothesis concerning the use of methylene blue in the treatment of cholera, the argument for its use being as follows : (1) The cholera vibrio on culture produces nitrites. (2) In the human gut the cholera vibrio probably produces nitrites from nitrogenous bowel content. (3) Absorption of nitrites would occur, having both a general and local effect. (4) The general effect of nitrite absorption may be a factor in the peripheral vascular failure of cholera, and dehydration may not be the sole factor in such failure.
